情陷 Austen

Jane Austen (1775 - 1817)  筆下的角色在銀幕上總是漂亮、聰慧、活潑，那作者本人呢，她短短 42 歲的人生又是怎樣渡過的？對自己曾經放手，錯過了的幾段美好姻緣，又何曾後悔？

英國廣播公司的電影《Miss Austen Regrets》(2008) 便是以此為藍本，電影甫開始 (1802年)，Harris Bigg-Wither 跪在地上向 Austen 求婚，那刻她是答應了的，但隔天又反了口，自此，她再沒有想結婚的事情了，儘管筆下的大部分角色也找到依歸。

《傲慢與偏見》首句亦開宗明義說明了她對婚姻的看法，"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife"，婚姻、歸宿對女性來說是何其重要。

12年後，侄女 Fanny Knight 初長成，找了愛情專家姑母 Jane Austen 給她找個如意郎君。但在姑母眼中，侄女是心急了，"Girls of twenty are so desperate to be in love. It's so hard to tell if it's real." 其後，心儀對象 Mr. John Plumptre 卻步，Fanny 認定是姑母存心破壞這段姻緣。

如果那時候，她嫁給了 Harris，便不用生活潦倒，為錢奔波。我們不得而知，是因為不夠愛 Harris 還是什麼原因放棄了。

Jane Austen 病了，告訴姊姊 Cassandra 她唯一的遺憾，是沒有嫁給 Harris，讓姊姊及母親安穩的家及收入，選擇了自由。或許是這份自由給了作者空間，創作了一個又一個鮮明生動的角色。


我相信，Jane Austen 是相信愛情的，她一直等待那個人的出現，當遇上真正愛的男人，才肯嫁人。

她告訴姊姊，"Quite happy is not enough. Quite happy is not the ending I want to write for my story."

關於選擇，Mme. Bigeon 說：But the fuss we make about who to choose. And love still dies and money still vanishes. And, spinster, lover, wife, every woman has regrets. So we read about your heroines and feel young again. And in love. And full of hope. As if we can make that choice again.

關於生命中那一位，Jane Austen 告訴侄女：My darling girl, this is the real world. The only way to get a man like Mr. Darcy is to make him up.
