Matthew Chan

 我最怕看英國廣播公司製作的 University Challenge，看這些節目，只會更印證自己的無知，所以總是敬而遠之。

還記得去年由劍橋大學伊曼紐爾學院 (Emmanuel College) 的 Alexander Guttenplan 所帶領的隊伍捧杯，轉眼又一年了。

今屆依然是過五關斬六將，先是第一回合 28 隊由院校組成的隊伍對決，再加入第一回合中得分最高的四隊輸家對賽選出兩組，16 隊進入第二回合，到半準決賽，準決賽，再到最後二強的決賽。

2010-11 的挑戰賽由 2010 年 7 月 5 日開始，整個挑戰賽至 2011 年 4 月 4 日正式完結。過程相對嚴謹，絶不能小覷。

最後兩強，是牛津大學馬德蓮學院 (Magdalen College) 與紐克大學各自組成隊伍的對壘。

帶領 Magdalen 的隊長是 Matthew Chan，家來自 Princethorpe, Warwickshire，只有21 歲之齡。

側面看，有點像周杰倫（哈，我自知膚淺，只能談論他的樣貎及眉宇間的傲氣）。

Magdalen College 以勝利的姿態，大比數勝出。

隊長的學識、才華，難免對他的出身有點好奇，只知他來自 Leamington Spa，估計他也是在英國長大接受教育。

他也沒有恃才矜己，接受英國《每日電訊報》訪問時談到，"It was always difficult being captain because I sometimes had to make quick decisions about which answer to give, but I was always helped by my team mates."

在電視上也看到他的謙厚，當遇到答不上的問題時，與其說 pass，他會直說 "I'm sorry, we don't know"）

如果他真的來自華人地區，恐怕又會很快有關於他的書出版，什麼 《牛津男孩》之類。

但英美這類的奇才確是多着呢，因此盡管嘗試在網上尋他的出處，也無從稽考。

賽後，馬德蓮學院 院長 Professor David Clary 大表讚揚。

The blend of undergraduates (Matthew Chan and Will Cudmore) and graduates (Kyle Haddad-Fonda and James McComish) proved to be a winning formula. With Kyle from the USA and James from Australia we have a team which reflects the truly international student composition both at Magdalen and Oxford.’
